OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

UPDATE – THE TOM WILKINSON VC STATUE APPEAL  29/12/2020
The committee have had discussions with the Landlord of the Mersey Hotel, aka The Snig in Mersey road West Bank Widnes who has kindly offered to site the Memorial to Act. Lt. Tom Wilkinson VC in the grounds of The Mersey Hotel.
This decision was not taken lightly, we feel that Halton Borough Council (HBC) have not supported this appeal in any way.
It saddens us that the only Widnes man to be awarded the Victoria Cross in WW2 will not have a statue, or be commemorated on HBC land.
Unfortunately the Statue Appeal has been unable to access grant applications; grants which were vital for a statue.
However, we are proud that we have raised enough money for a Memorial to this great man and everyone who he represents, — “All those who have gone into a situation, where they knew they could pay the ultimate price, whilst serving their country.
The date for unveiling will be the 79th anniversary of the actions of Tom Wilkinson; 14 February 2021; weather and Covid19 permitted.
We would like to thank all who supported the Appeal

Our aims and objectives are, to have a statue of Tom Wilkinson VC erected in Spike Island West Bank, opposite the entrance of the Catalyst museum subject to HBC’s permission.

We have had the grave memorial on Tom Wilkinson family grave restored.

Which was done by Jack Hartley, who has restored many other long forgotten Headstones of young men who gave their all for our Country.

We are going to have two memorials dedicated to all Seafarers/Mariners of WW1 and WW2. One is going to be in Runcorn cemetery and the other by the statue of Tom Wilkinson VC. Wherever that maybe.

TOM WILKINSON VC STATUE & MEMORIAL APPEAL

Trading name :- The Tom Wilkinson VC statue appeal.

As you can see, the appeal have been successful in getting a statue for both Todger Jones VC DCM (Runcorn) & Tom Mottershead VC DCM (Widnes), but unfortunately, due to lack of funds and falling well short of our £65,000 target, Tom Wilkinson VC will NOT get a statue, but we will remember him with a Memorial stone, this will be sited somewhere in West Bank Widnes, very near his birth place.

As we are registered as a statue & Memorial Appeal with the Charity commission, we will if funds allow, remember other people/groups from either WW1 & WW2, and other conflicts. We will be remembering the Seafarers & Mariners of Widnes, like the Runcorn one.

LETS MAKE HALTON PROUD OF IT’s HEROES.
